Edge Hill University

Edge Hill University is situated in Ormskirk, England between the cities of Liverpool and Manchester. The university which celebrates its 125th anniversary this year has invested over £130m towards creating one of the best campuses in UK and has been shortlisted for the prestigious Times Higher Education Award for the UK's University of the Year 2010.

For the University of the Year title, judges look at the institution's performance in several areas such as research, teaching, access and business performance. Judges also look for specific evidence of particularly imaginative and innovative initiatives that have enhanced the University's reputation. Those shortlisted are regarded as examples of best practice in higher education.

In November 2006, Edge Hill University won the Times Higher Award for 'Outstanding Student Financial Support Package'. In late 2007 it was confirmed that Edge Hill University had made the shortlist for 'University of the Year' in the Times Higher Education Awards 2007.

Since Edge Hill received university status in May 2006 it has become the UK's fastest growing university and has seen applications grow almost four-fold. Only last month it was ranked top in the north-west in the 2010 National Student Survey and in the top 10 nationally for students' personal development - as it has been in all surveys to date. The University is also featured in the top 10 for graduate employment, with fewer than 4.5% of its graduates not engaged in work or further study - despite being in a region with above average unemployment.

Edge Hill College was opened on 24 January 1885 on Durning Road, Edge Hill, Liverpool, named after the district in which it was sited. It was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in England. By 1892, Edge Hill was one of only two colleges in England combining teacher training and degree course study. Over a hundred years later, Edge Hill University is the United Kingdom’s largest provider of education and training for the whole school workforce and a major supplier of staff for the NHS offering more than 200 degree programmes to some 23,500 students.

Edge Hill was in 2005 granted Taught Degree Awarding Powers by the Privy Council and in May 2006 became Edge Hill University.

Edge Hill has 3 faculties: The faculty of Arts & Sciences, Faculty of Health and Faculty of Education. The Edge Hill Business School comes under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

Recognised as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning by the Higher Education Funding Council, Edge Hill has been awarded Commendations for Teaching and Learning in every subject review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) in the last three years. 2005 saw further recognition in the first National Student Survey, with Edge Hill polling joint fifth for overall satisfaction of students at higher education institutions and rated at or above the national average in all seven teaching quality areas.
