The
latest Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) showed that the University
of Sunderland is now the top-rated
'new' university in the UK for its overall quality, range and
quantity of research. That means you will be studying with staff who
are leaders in their fields.
The University has seen
significant investment during the past decade, including the
development of an award-winning riverside campus. The Commission for
Architecture and the Built Environment recently highlighted
Sunderland's facilities as some of the best in the UK - a university
with a 'wow factor'.
The University has five academic Schools. They
are: Arts, Design, Media & Culture; Computing & Technology;
Education & Lifelong Learning; Health, Natural & Social Sciences;
and Sunderland Business School.
In
the latest Research Assessment Exercise the University received
acclaim for the depth and breadth of its research activity. The
following areas were highly rated and were assessed as having
national or international recognition for quality of research:
Pharmacy, Computer Science, English Language and Literature,
History, Art and Design, Communication, Cultural and Media Studies
and Education.
The University is based
on two main FYITes. Both of them are well equipped with modern
learning and leisure facilities. On the north bank of the River Wear
lies the Sir Tom Cowie Campus. Sunderland Business School, the David
Goldman Informatics Centre, and the brand new Media Centre are all
based at this riverside location. A total investment of over £50m
provides some of the best learning and support facilities in the
country. At the University's City Campus, students can enjoy a 'one
stop shop' for services and information that will help them get the
most out of student life. Other state-of-the-art facilities include
the Murray Library and the science complex, a modern range of
laboratories for students undertaking science programs.
The University has a total student population of
over 16,000, including over 1,800 international students from nearly
70 countries.
Sunderland is a 'can
do' city which has transformed itself over the past 15 years. High
tech businesses have taken over from traditional industries:
Sunderland is now, officially, one of the seven most IT intelligent
communities in the world and a recent study rated it one of the UK's
top five 'places to do business with'.
