Modules Synopsis

BUS 1000 Business Economics
Economics is an area of study that recognizes that resources are scarce and that choices must be made between alternative uses. Economics education is concerned with the understanding of human behavior in respect of those choices, and thus in the creation, exchange and distribution of wealth.

BUS 1001 Law for Business
An understanding of some basic legal principle is important to managers, in particular the rules relating to contract; consumer protection, corporate liability can help inform decision making in organizations. Recourse to law though is generally to be avoided and so it is important that the subject is seen in a wider context and students exposed to issues relating to risk evaluation.

BUS 1002 Accounting
An ability to understand and interpret information is an invaluable ability/skills foe all who are involved with organizations, whether they be :employee; researcher, manager, consumer and the main decision making tool used by organization is arguably ‘ financial information ’.

BUS 1003 Personal Development
This module will run for the entire academic year at two hours per week. The module will introduce students to studying at level four and above and provide them, in the early part of the module with a range of appropriate study skills that will be subject focused. In addition to this careers information will be introduced periodically and supported by the careers department and suitable external presenters. Students will be introduced to the concept of continuing professional development (CPD) and the development of appropriate employability skills. Students will reflect on their own personal circumstances, abilities, skills and aspirations and construct action plans in association with their personal tutor which will be reviewed periodically and refocused in line with evolving personal goals. Students will reflect on the feedback from assignments and introduce the comments into their action and skills development plan. The module will conclude with a reflection on year one and action plan for year two.

BUS 1004 Work, Management & OB
There are three major themes to this module. The first provides students with an understanding of the major developments in modern management. The second theme considers moves away from rational models where organizations became increasingly interested in developing strong corporate cultures, improving flexibility and devising HRM-type people management strategies. Contemporary issues are discussed in theme three where the emphasis is upon managing identities and the impact of globalization. By providing students with opportunities to learn about each of these themes we will prepare them better for many of the module in year-two and year-three.

BUS 1005 Information Systems
The competitive global market and the changing technological nature of society heavily influence the practice of business. Adaptation to and obtaining strategic value from information and use of communication technology will determine the success of organization. This module will evaluate how the technology has evolved and its place for use for delivery of information and communication today and in the future. It will also address the ways in which business in changing the way it is operationalised.

BUS 2000 Marketing
Central to the success of any organization (profit-making or not-far-profit) is an understanding of the fundamentals of marketing. This module aims to define marketing and introduce students to key marketing concepts and modules.

BUS 2001 Human Resource Management
This module is concerned with developments in Human Resource Management since the early 1980s and current people management practice. In keeping with the management discipline in general, there have been a number of significant developments in the management of people over the last few decades not least with the move away from Personal Management to Human Resource Management. In the UK we have moved some way toward a post-Fordist (Alvesson and Willmott, 2002) or high modern (Giddens, 1991) era where organization are compelled to manage increasingly fragmented identities (Sennett, 1998) and employee wellbeing, as well as adopting a more strategic outlook. These changes have considerable implications for the HR function in organizations. We consider the reasons why such developments have taken place and analyse their influence upon the people management function.

BUS 2006 Work related Learning
The substantive elements in this module comprise working with organizations to identify and analyze work place problems appropriate to the programme of study: research and identify a range of potential solutions; implement and evaluate the most appropriate solution after discussion with the work place and academic mentors; and write an evaluative report on this project.
This Module furthers the career development learning plans (PDP) for students enabling them to have the required skills and confidence in applying and securing employment for both short-term and year long industrial placements, thus enhancing their overall prospects in gaining level employment.
Learning will continue to record their skills enhancement on their e portfolio and reflect on their experiences at the end of the level.

BUS 2013 International Business
The world in which business operates has changed substantially in recent years, and many of the pressures under which UK business operates are international. The understanding of key economic concepts and theories will be developed in this module, and critical analysis will be undertaken to examine from an economic perspective the operation of business in a fast changing business world. In addition, the module considers other significant international factors such as business cultures, political systems, pressure groups and environmental issues. As well as having a theoretical underpinning, the module will be highly topical. To that end, and depending on the international economy at the time, individual markets will be analysed.

BUS 2014 Global Corporate Social Responsibility
Companies operating in globalising markets are increasingly required to balance the social, economic and environmental components of their business, while building shareholder value. Organizations that choose to ignore this responsibility, risk their futures, reputations and profits. It is imperative that the modern manager is aware of the various ethical issues that may have an impact upon their organization and devise mechanisms to deal with them.

BUS 2003 Research Methods
The module is essential underpinning for the Level 6 Dissertation.  It introduces students to a range of research methodologies and guides them to the development of their research proposal.

BUS 2106 Graduate Skills
The development of graduate skills and preparation for employment are critical aspects of the degree.
This Module furthers the career development learning plans for students enabling them to have the required skills and confidence in applying and securing employment for both short-term and long term posts, thus enhancing their overall prospects in gaining graduate level employment.
Learners will to record their skills enhancement in their portfolio and reflect on their experiences at the end of the level. The module will run throughout the two semesters that students study in Singapore with the focus changing from study skills to those related to the graduate labour market.

BUS 3000 Strategy & Decision Making
The module provides an opportunity to consider how different business functions relate together in informing the development of strategy. Deciding strategic directions is about meeting choices and aspects of decision making are therefore included in the module.

BUS 3001 Dissertation
The dissertation is a key piece of evidence that a student has developed and can apply graduate level skills. It requires the design and implementation of a research project in an area of business or management and should include some element of original research, for example interviews or a questionnaire. The module follows on from Research Methods at Level 5 and ideally students should identify their project as part of that module. Support on the dissertation is given by a specified tutor although the responsibility for managing the process rests with the student.

BUS 3002 International Management
The module will be organised around three core themes. Theme one will outline the development of the global economy throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. It will concentrate on the importance of existing and new centres of production in developed and developing economies in Western and Central/Eastern Europe, The Americas and the Asian ‘Tiger economies’. It will be located in a theoretical discussion centred on the convergence/divergence dualism. Theme two will look at the role of the ‘stateless corporation’ and Management Development programmes in the growth of the ‘Global Manager and assess the role of state-centred regulatory frameworks. Theme three will identify the distinctiveness of, and similarities between, national and regional models of management and the specificity of their people management strategies.

BUS 3004 International Strategic Marketing
The increase of globalisation on business means that an understanding of international influences becomes critical. This module develops understanding of marketing concepts by providing opportunities to apply them in international and strategic contexts.

BUS 3010 Global Influences
The increasing trend towards globalisation represents a challenge to 21st century organisations.  This module provides theoretical insights into globalisation and provides opportunities to use these to analyse current events.
